Advance-purchase discounts as a price discrimination device
نویسندگان
چکیده
In an intertemporal setting in which individual uncertainty is resolved over time, advancepurchase discounts can serve to price discriminate between consumers with different expected valuations for the product. Consumers with a high expected valuation purchase the product before learning their actual valuation at the offered advance-purchase discount; consumers with a low expected valuation will wait and purchase the good at the regular price only in the event where their realized valuation is high. We characterize the profitmaximizing pricing strategy of the monopolist. Furthermore, adopting a mechanism design perspective, we provide a necessary and suffi cient condition under which advance-purchase discounts implement the monopolist’s optimal mechanism.

Competition in the Presence of Individual Demand Uncertainty
This paper sheds light on an empirical controversy about the effect of competition on price discrimination. We propose a model in which consumers learn their preferences over time and show that firms offer advance purchase discounts. Consumers choose between an early (uninformed) purchase at a low price and a late (informed) purchase at a high price. Competing firms offer higher discounts to se...
متن کاملThe Allocation of Inventory Risk in a Supply Chain: Push, Pull, and Advance - Purchase Discount Contracts
W every firm in a supply chain bears supply risk (the cost of insufficient supply), some firms may, even with wholesale price contracts, completely avoid inventory risk (the cost of unsold inventory). With a push contract there is a single wholesale price and the retailer, by ordering his entire supply before the selling season, bears all of the supply chain’s inventory risk. A pull contract al...
متن کاملAre Consumers Fooled by Discounts? An Experimental Test in a Consumer Search Environment
In this paper we investigate experimentally if people search optimally and how price promotions inuence search behavior. We implement a sequential search task with exogenous price dispersion in a baseline treatment and introduce discounts in two experimental treatments. We nd that search behavior is roughly consistent with optimal search but also observe some discount biases. If subjects don...
متن کاملA comparison of two types of price discounts in shifting consumers' attitudes and purchase intentions
This study focuses on consumer responses to two different types of price discounts: 1) a price discount with and 2) a price discount without a minimum purchase requirement. The effects of the discounts are examined to the extent that they may change consumers' attitudes and purchase intentions regarding a particular brand, by moving it from consumers' hold set to consideration set. A three-phas...
متن کاملAn Empirical Analysis of Consumer Purchase Decisions under Price - Discrimination Bucket Pricing
Price-Discrimination bucket pricing (PDBP) is a unique price format that usually involves monthly subscription fees and instantaneous quotas. We propose an empirical model in which consumers make dynamic purchase decisions under consumption uncertainty, accounting for the constraints imposed by the instantaneous quota. Applying the model to an online DVD rental data, we find that (1) consumers ...
